OAS and Colombia kick start the Summit of the Americas Process for 2012

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the government of Colombia on Thursday kick started the process towards the Summit of the Americas 2012 in the meeting of the Joint Summit Working Group (JSWG), held at OAS Headquarters in Washington, DC.

The meeting, hosted by OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza and co-chaired by the Vice Minister of Foreign Relations of Colombia, Clemencia Forero Ucros, was attended by representatives from the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), the International Organization for Migrations (IOM), the International Labor Office (ILO) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). All international organizations in the JSWG expressed their full support to the Colombian hosts of the Summit.

United Nations Development Programme joins the Joint Summit Working Group

UN organization becomes thirteenth member of JSWG

In October 2009, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) accepted the invitation of Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza to join as a member of the Joint Summit Working Group (JSWG). The UNDP joins the OAS and eleven other partner institutions of the JSWG , which was created in 2001 to increase institutional coordination of inter-American and international organizations to support the Summits Process.

UNDP, a global network of the United Nations which has offices in 166 countries around the world, focuses on helping countries in overcoming the challenges in the fields of democratic governance, poverty reduction, crisis prevention, environment and HIV/AIDS. The Summits of the Americas Secretariat will work to actively engage UNDP in the actions of the JSWG in the follow-up process of the Fifth Summit of the Americas, as well as in preparation for the Sixth Summit of the Americas.

The workshop took place on Monday, February 22, 2010, at the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The event was attended by “focal points” representatives from 23 government institutions identified by the government of Colombia.
